Surviving the Holidays as a Business Owner: Boundaries, Balance, and Breaks

The holidays are a magical time of year, right? But the holidays as a business owner can also be super overwhelming, especially when you’re juggling clients, family, holiday events, and all the things.

So how do you get through the season without feeling totally burnt out?

It comes down to three things: boundaries, balance, and breaks.

Let’s break those down.

1. Set Boundaries to Protect Your Time

This time of year, everyone wants a piece of you – clients, family, friends, even your business. Setting clear boundaries is the only way to stay sane. This might mean setting expectations with your clients about your availability or even blocking off days in your calendar where you are completely off the clock.

It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to take time off (and if you struggle with stepping away from your business, check out this episode of the Simple Online Business podcast). I promise your business won’t crumble if you step away for a few days to recharge.

2. Find Balance Between Business and Personal Life

Balance is a tricky word, but what it really means is making sure you’re not neglecting any one part of your life. During the holidays, it can feel like your business is demanding a lot of attention, but you have a real life and obligations there too. How can you balance both without feeling stretched too thin?

Here’s my suggestion: Prioritize what’s most important. Maybe this is a time to scale back on business tasks that aren’t critical and instead focus on what will move the needle the most, so you can spend more time enjoying the holiday season.

3. Take Breaks (Yes, Really!)

I know it can feel scary to step away from your business, especially during a busy season, but taking breaks is essential. A rested you is going to be much more creative and productive than a frazzled, burnt-out you.

So take that break. Unplug. Be present with the people you love. Your business will be there when you get back – and you’ll come back with so much more energy.
