I’ve been an active user of Threads for over a year now and constantly recommend it to business owners as a place to grow your business and network. People are always asking me, “do you really use Threads for business?” and the truth is-I’ve found Threads to be a really refreshing platform that is actually reminding us of the “social” in social media, because it seems to support authentic networking really well. If you’re looking to connect with potential clients, build real connections with new friends, and grow your business, Threads is a platform worth spending time on.
Here’s why and how to get started:
Why Threads Is Worth Your Time for Business Growth
1. The Focus is on Real Conversations
One of Threads’ biggest advantages is its emphasis on meaningful discussions. Unlike other platforms where posts have a short shelf life and are then buried under a ton of new content, Threads is focused on engagement, allowing you to have deeper, more thoughtful conversations.
Unlike platforms like Instagram, which focuses on quick interactions, Threads lets you form deeper connections, making it a perfect fit for relationship-based marketing, which is essential for coaches, consultants, and service providers.
2. Engagement Is Rewarded
Different content is prioritized on Threads than other platforms. Conversations get more reach than broadcast-style posting, which means more meaningful interactions. If you’re like me, this just feels so much more fulfilling and worthwhile than other platforms where you feel like you’re shouting into the void, struggling to get good reach, and often getting crickets on your posts. It also means that not just your own posts, but also your responses on other people’s posts, get you visibility in front of new potential friends and clients.
3. Curated, Niche Communities
The Threads algorithm feels really sensitive to your interests (based on what you engage with) which leads to focused, niche communities around specific topics and industries. Engaging regularly with others who are talking about your area of expertise helps you build a reputation and become known for that thing. This means potential clients will think of you when they need your services, and your new professional network will think of you when they are making a referral.
4. A Space for Thought Leadership
If you’re looking to establish yourself as an authority in your industry, Threads, particularly right now, is a great opportunity to do it. Because Threads rewards quality conversations (and the fact that a lot of people are still not marketing there), you can share value, provide advice, and become known for your expertise faster and easier. This strengthens your personal brand and attracts high-value connections that could end up becoming clients or business besties.
How to Get Started on Threads
Getting started on Threads is simple, but there are some tips to get the most out of it and start building connections for your business:
1. Sign Up and Set Up Your Profile
If you haven’t done this already, download the Threads app (click here to download on Apple devices or click here to download on Google devices) and create your account. Since Threads is connected to Instagram, it can automatically set you up with username, profile, and accounts to follow, based on what you’ve done over on Instagram.
Personally, I changed a few things about my Threads profile instead of just copying over the one from Instagram. Threads is focused on relationships and being a real person, so I let more of my personality show.
Consider including:
- Interests you might want to discuss (outside of business).
- Personal details like your location to connect with people in your area.
- A brief description of what you do & who you help.
- A profile picture that actually shows your face.
- A link to your website, booking page, or other resources like an email list opt in, so when people visit your profile, they can learn more.
2. Start Engaging
Threads is all about community, so the first thing you should do after setting up your profile is to join conversations that are relevant to your business and that interest you. To really enjoy the platform, I’ve found it’s important to balance engaging with conversations and posts that are aligned with your interests (for me: NBAThreads is one of these!) as well as posts that are relevant to your industry, niche, or expertise.
Start by scrolling and browsing, then add value with thoughtful comments, advice, or questions. Networking on Threads isn’t about self-promotion—it’s about showing up as a real human and a valuable participant in discussions.
When you come across posts you don’t like (and you will), don’t be afraid to click:
- Not Interested: teach Threads you’re not interested in this topic and it will show you less content like this
- Mute: don’t see posts from this person anymore, but they can still see you and engage with you
- Block: remove this person from your Threads world, you won’t see them and they won’t see you
This part is really important for curating a homepage that shows you what you want to see. Be prepared to prune your feed periodically.
3. Post Thoughtful Content
Once you’re comfortable with the platform and “read the room,” start creating your own posts! Unlike platforms where short and quick posts with catchy hooks dominate, Threads is a place for deeper thoughts and conversation starters. You can:
- Share personal stories about business or your life.
- Share your business philosophy.
- Offer advice based on your expertise.
- Ask questions that prompt engagement.
Don’t be afraid to keep talking about the same things – this repetition is how you become known for your expertise.
If creating content is something you struggle with, I made something just for you! In my book, Copy That Compels, I walk you through how to overcome the most common copywriting and content creation pitfalls – and how to write content that speaks right to the heart of your ideal client. 4. Engage Regularly
The key to success on Threads is consistent engagement. Respond to comments on your posts, continue conversations you’re involved in, and be proactive in reaching out to new people who share your interests.
The more active and unfiltered you are, the more your network will grow. Over time, your relationships will get stronger, and these connections can lead to potential clients, referrals, and collaborations.
5. Leverage Your Instagram Audience
Promote your Threads profile on Instagram, inviting your audience to join you on Threads for deeper, unfiltered conversations.
This can help you speed up your audience growth on Threads, giving you a strong base of engaged followers who already know, like, and trust you.
